The AXA Defender RL frame bicycle lock is a tough, sturdy, and heavy duty lock that can be installed directly onto most bicycle frames. The Defender RL frame lock is simple to use in everyday situations. With its simple turn of a key, lock and go functionality, you will be locked and on your way in a breeze. This frame lock is key operated, and by itself it can lock the bicycle by creating a steel ring through the spokes of the wheel, securing it to the frame, effectively making the bike un-ride-able. With its optional plug-in cable or plug-in chain (sold separately), the Defender RL can lock both the wheel and the bicycle frame very securely. For those times when you need to lock the bicycle to a rack, or other stationary object, the optional plug-in chains and plug-in cables is very beneficial. Use of the Defender frame lock is very straightforward. When locking the bicycle it can be done in one of two methods: (Method 1) Alone, simply push the red latch while turning the key to apply the wheel lock. The bike cannot be ridden away. (Method 2) With the additional plug-in chain or plug-in cable, you loop the chain or cable around the bicycle frame itself, and a bike rack. Then plug the end of the chain into the Defender frame lock and turn the key engaging the fully locking system. Now the bike cannot be ridden away or carried away. optional plug-in cables and chains are sold separately.

You'll just never believe how incredibly convenient this lock is until you try it out for yourself. Usually I have to hunt around and find the bike lock, find some place to stash or store it while I'm riding, and dig around to find the right key. But with this lock, it's always on your bike ready to go, is solidly attached right to the bike, and because the key can't be removed unless it is locked, you also never end up misplacing or losing the key. It's perfect for my town, which is a pretty low-crime area, and for quick trips dropping off kids at daycare or into shops. The chain that attaches into it ramps up the security and is convenient for locking up all of my families bikes together. Very easy to use and install!
So I bought this after I returned for Amsterdam and noticed many bikes there have them. I am sure it does not totally prevent theft there but works great for where I live. I had a bike shop install it because the tiny little clamps that come with it are not secure enough. I know you can purchase a mounting bracket which would work fine, but the bike shop I went to had no issues. I have it on my commuter bike,so I always have a lock, never need to carry one. Its nice to use with the chain or cable when you will be away for your bike for hours. I use just the wheel lock when going into a store or somewhere for a few minutes. Great lock
